Softcover is where the page count lives. The 6x8 and 8x8 formats run to 200 pages, the highest of anything we print, and the 8x11 to 150. If you have a year or a decade to fit in one book, this is the format that takes it.
The cover is a flexible printed card rather than a rigid board. It weighs less and bends rather than cracks in a bag. The trade-off is protection, so for a gift or an heirloom a hardcover holds up better.
